Baystars V Surfers Game Report.....8th Nov

What a Difference a Day Makes

Runaway Baystars vs Surfer's

Date:   Saturday 8th November 2008
Place:  Paul Scanlan Oval Paradise Point
Result: Baystars 8 Surfers 10

On a hot, steamy, overcast Saturday afternoon on an immaculately presented park (Thanks Bruce) saw the Runaway Bay Baystars face their nemesis; Surfer's Paradise, and rid themselves once and for all of their 'Lyon' share of nerves to "Ram" home some very convincing played Baseball. (Pardon the puns...Lol...)

This was a day of so many 'firsts' & memorable moments that resulted in several successful debuts from Pitching to Catching positions. All the way through the Baystars worked as a strong team, they kept their heads, read the game play, fielded, batted, pitched, caught some great balls and kept tight and consistent.

Surfers were first up to bat:

Pitcher Alex Hayes whole demeanour looked as if he really meant business; sternly looking down the brim of his hat and leaning his very considerable lengthy frame forward on his knee, and stared down the first batter up to face him, and pitched the first ball and was rewarded with a strike against Surfers. The slow beaming smile broke across his face & spoke volumes of just how good that felt. Alex continued to give a very convincing show of strong accurate pitching to the debut catcher Jay Myers.

Although the two played on the same team for Gold Coast Little League & Under 14 Reps and now Runaway Bay, Jay & Alex had never been placed to work together.... but they looked as if they were old hands at it, and worked as a very effective duo closing down the Surfers side and keeping runs to a minimum. Thanks to the great job of catching & blocking from Jay Myers Surfers were not able to steal bases and notch up the runs as in previous games.

It looked as if the 'first aid kit' might need to be brought out when Beth and Alex looked to almost collide in the in-field when trying for a Cory Lyon fly ball catch. But "Girl Power" won out and Beth took a superb catch! And was immediately congratulated by a gracious Alex. The Runaway Bay supporters erupted in their usual dignified manner and yelled and screamed long & loud! Beth continued to have a brilliant game at and took quite a few outs.

Rookie Pitcher Toby Needs gave a great account of himself and in his first time pitching struck out the first batter. The game was full of so many memorable moments Macauley Le Plastrier's quick pickup and tag saw another Surfers player out of the game. Matthew Miotto on second base valiantly tried for a double play, but had to make do with a superb single out. Fletcher Britten despite being full of a very heavy cold held third base and pitched like a Pro. Matthew Watmuff was catcher for the last two innings to both Toby and Fletcher and did a great job.

The considerable speed of Ryan Caldwell as left outfielder and Jay Myers unfortunately were not enough to prevent a massive hit and superb home run from Cory Lyon the only one in the game. Coaches Peter Wood and Mark Miotto called the umpires attention to an obvious balk by the pitcher and an out ball in right field keeping all play above board.

Despite Surfers team having some very heavy weight talented players at no time throughout the game did they look to be sure fired winners, and the Baystars did a brilliant job just loosing out to a nail biting finish by two runs…. and although they were disappointed there was absolutely no shame in that at all!

But that takes nothing away from the superb skills of the Surfers players as always they were spot on! But self-confidence being such an intangible thing in the minds of our kids when being faced of the larger than life skills and invincibility of the ‘Roar’ of Cory Lyon and the rest of his talented ‘ Surfers pride’ had to be faced and this happened here today! ………Psssssssst don't tell any other State Teams though! The Gold Coast's and State Rams Cory Lyon is still King of the Queensland Jungle.

The Coaches on both sides are to be congratulated in presenting two excellent worthy sides. Each and every player of both teams did a superb job and as a spectator I felt a sense of gratitude and pride watching a great bunch of smart young people a credit to themselves parents and coaches, being part of a team having fun and displaying skills that were worthy of cheering for.

Great Job GREAT GAME!

Grateful thanks as always to Jane for doing a brilliant job scoring and Stewart for his fair Umpiring.

    BRUCE & VANDA

Our eternal thanks go out to our favourite couple for their tireless work and huge effort  put in by them both in Keeping the Club House and Canteen spotlessly clean, cooking of the Saturday morning BBQ and the brilliant job in keeping the Grounds looking good.

I honestly don't know what the club would do without you both!  Safe Journey!  Enjoy your Break  and Come back soon!

    CANTEEN VOLUNTEERS NEEDED PLEASE!

As with all children's activities, this club is currently being run by a small group of dedicated volunteers, and they need help desperately!  Our canteen is an important part of our raising much needed funds for the club so that we can buy new equipment, and improve the facilities for your children.

We are looking for either or both Mum's & Dad's who are prepared to help operate the Canteen for one Saturday a season. That's right.... just one (1) Saturday morning per season!! (or even a hour would help greatly!)

If you are a new member to the club, there really isn't a better way of meeting other club members than the Canteen.

If every child's parents (one or both of them..... we're not greedy) were to help us out with this we would be able to ease the burden on our current canteen Mum's & Dad's (Nan's & Granddad's ) for other necessary jobs and share the load around.

If you can see your way to giving up just an hour of your precious time a week we would be much obliged and the clubs facilities and much needed equipment can be replace that much sooner.

Please contact Donelle down at the club and we will ensure that you will have someone else to show you the ropes and to share the load with

    U14 Baystar's 1st Game Report - 11th Oct

Donna Myers, Tuesday, 14 October 2008

    Congratulations

     Runaway U14 Baystars

.... & special thank you to

    Robina Braves For a

    Great Game!

On a wet a dreary Saturday afternoon that looked to be a wash out for the start of the 2008-2009 Baseball seasons first day; we were privileged to watch a great game of sportsmanship and saw some really good baseball at Robina Braves home grounds.

Under grey skies and steady drizzling rain the excellent pitching from our own Fletcher Britten and the Braves Jason Goddard saw the game pretty much closed down for the major part of the game, with very low score from both sides. Then with a change of pitcher and some good hitting from the Braves and some fielding errors from the Baystars saw the run count slowly climb in the Braves favour.

Thought to be the unofficial favourites to take out this year’s competition our own laidback Baystars got a bit of a rude wake up call when the score was one run down  at the second last innings of the game.

With two players out, some great hits and base stealing from the Baystars saw the run count slowly climb back in their favour, then they got their Mojo back with a text book run down by the Baystars that seemed to go on and on, with a  valiant Braves effort but superb Baystars alternate back ups, chasing and throwing from first to second it made for exciting viewing. The Baystars Coach Peter Wood was afterward overheard commenting to onlookers that “I was going to  include the run down procedure in next weeks training session, the but after that text book play we might not need to?”

This was the lift that the Baystars needed because then the runs started to climb up and up.  With rapidly darkening skies and the clouds rolling in it looked as if the game was going to be called due to bad light but the Baystars finished their innings pulling in front and the Braves took to the field.  With one player out, the game was wrapped up by an excellent double play by short stop Jay Myers taking over 2nd base and throwing to Alex Hayes on first.  Game over.  Congratulations to:- Lincoln Axford-Wood, Fletcher Britten, Ryan Caldwell, Alex Hayes, Macauley LePlastrier, Matthew Miotto, Jay Myers, Toby Needs & Mathew Watmuff for a great team effort & the 1st win of the season!

On behalf of Runaway Bay Supporters we would like to say a big Thank you to all the Robina parents and committee members who gave us such a very warm welcome a special thank you must go to Susan Goddard and the very fair and consistent Umpiring from Rob Goddard.

This day was a great example of how the game of baseball should be played and run.  The great hospitality shown, the spirit of friendly banter & rivalry and sportsmanship by both teams and supporters should be the yardstick that other Hosts and visitors alike should aim for.  If this is the start of the season then 2008-2009 will be the best year yet!  Well done for a very enjoyable Saturday afternoon game to all!

Well done! Gold Coast U14 Rep Team..........State Titles 2008

Donna Myers, Monday, 13 October 2008

    Gold Coast Under 14's Reps

    2008 State Titles

After their massive Super league Championship culminating at a heart stopping finals win at the Runcorn Indian grounds the Gold Coast Under 14's Rep team were hot favourites to take out the State Championship title at Lismore NSW.  But the other 4 Brisbane teams and Far North Coast and North Queensland had different idea's

The coaches, Team members and supporting families watched the Queensland Baseball  web site for the game and draw times.  The team as one believed that they had a late 12.30 game on the 3rd, so it was agreed to travel and book accommodation for the Friday thru to Sunday  at the last minute however the Sunshine Coast pulled out of the tournament and all of the fixtures were changed.

The Gold Coast was extremely unlucky in the draw and apart from  an 8.30 am first game with  Brisbane Metro followed closely with Brisbane North's two of the hardest teams in the competition each and every game thereafter were to be played  back to back for the duration of the tournament.

On Friday the first day of the competition most of the Gold Coast team were early risers having to leave the  Gold Coast around 5 am to begin their 2 hour journey to arrive in Lismore at 7am in time for warm up training.   Whilst the Brisbane teams arrived in Lismore the night before, had a team dinner and a team breakfast arriving at the grounds refreshed and wanting to take the Gold Coast down a peg or two!

    Day one:

With temperatures expected in the high 30º it promised to be a long tiring day.  The setting for the first game at the Beautiful Baxter Field with superb grounds and under cover stands couldn't have been better.   The Gold Coast were a bit slow to get going.  The team looked tired and a few silly mistakes saw Metro take the lead.  The Gold Coast then had to play catch up  and at one stage looked to be doing just that, when there were quite a few controversial unfortunate umpiring decisions going all too often against  Gold Coast which saw the end of the game Gold Coast down 14 runs to 6

With less than 15 minutes between games, the boys didn't  have a chance to catch their breath and change fields before the game with Brisbane North's was on in full.   With no time to eat or drink or take stock of the last game the boys tried their best and in truth looked likely  to win. But the Gold Coast didn't have luck on their side, there were some amazing unfortunate controversial umpiring decisions,  at least two of them with bases loaded the 3rd out was given against the Coast the most spectacular of these decisions went against Corey Lyon. Dylan Waddingham (AKA Boofhead) too was the recipient when an out on first base was called safe by the first base umpire but out by the 3rd base North's coach which almost guaranteed another Gold Coast defeat.

    Day Two:

After a good nights rest and with two loses against them there was nothing left to loose.... the Gold Coast went out to have some fun! Relaxed and with 'no pressure' got their 'MO JO' back in 'Spades' beating Far North Coast 16 runs to 10 The only team to beat FNC in the tournament.  Followed all too closely by the Brisbane West game.  This game was without a doubt the closest matched with a 4 all draw.

    Day Three:

After team meals for the Team Coaches and families and a reasonably late night (some later than others) the boys were back looking good and working well!  (Some of the adults however were looking a bit seedy and worse for wear.. shhhhhhs you know who!)  Another scorching hot and humid day saw the  Gold Coast defeat Brisbane South  11 - 8  followed by North Queensland  8-6

    Summing Up

In truth all of the teams were /are really good and it's one of those things that it could have been anyone's day.  As it was it was FNC who took out the State Championship Tournament.  With the Gold Coast coming in at a very respectable 4th place.

I, among all the other parents were supremely proud of the Gold Coast boys and their Coaches Manager and bat boy each and every one of them fought hard and tried their best and were true sportsmen to be proud of right through to the end!

Well done Gold Coast and the large Runaway Bays contingent of; ALEX HAYES, Ben Simpson, FLETCHER BRITTEN, MATTHEW MIOTTO, KYLE EGAN, LINCOLN AXFORD-WOOD & JAY MYERS,

Special Big congratulations to Ben Simpson from Runaway Bay for being chosen for selection into the Queensland Rams State squad!  Well Done Ben!

Congratulations also to Corey Lyon & Brayden Cacaccio from Surfers Paradise for also being selected!  Well done Boys!
